Videos

I am particularly interested in the use of video in and outside of the classroom.  I am also interested in students using screen-capture tools which include an element of video and/or audio recording. In this section, I have shared a selection of videos which I have been involved in making. Many of these include situations in which control of the camera has been given to the students.  There is also a link, on the new Wibiya toolbar, to more of my videos on YouTube (some of which are not related to TEFL!)  Please note: most of these videos involve students I have previously taught and therefore, with the exception of the Tanzanian videos, are set to unlisted on YouTube. This means that they are not publicly searchable.  There are notes on copyright infringement as many of my videos include audio recordings owned by someone else.  I believe that I am not adding to YouTube anything that isn't already on there.  Third-Party Matched Content does not mean it will be removed, unless the owner specifically asks. I would interested to hear any comments on this and other views about the videos.

Professional Practice Project Proposal Presentation                        NEW !!
This new video is a presentation of my project proposal to my fellow ICT students on the course at the University of Warwick, on 16 March 2012.  It will combine my two favourite tools used on the course - MyBrainshark and Camtastia Studio.  It features a small clip of Xiameng Miao's presentation on podcasting as she was talking about the same issue of Chinese students not being able to practice speaking away from the classroom.

Teaching at KSU

This video shows me teaching at King Saud University, Riyadh, overlaying a commentary as it plays.   One of the many possible things you can do with MyBrainshark (see #6).

Bad Romance

Here is a video made during a film project on a 2 week summer course in Cambridge, UK, with teenagers.  It was their idea to do a 'Romeo and Juliet' pastiche and they had great fun dressing up.  I was executive producer, but they took all the main roles of director, actors, scriptwriters, clapperboard, costumes, make up, runners etc. The credits have been removed because they include the students' names (July 2010):

Notice: No copyright infringement intended. The video features extracts of 'Celebration' by Madonna (Published by Warner Music Group) and 'Hallelujah' by Jeff Buckley (written by Leonard Cohen, published by Columbia).  The 'director's cut' originally featured the track, 'Bad Romance', written by Stefani Germanotta, Nadir Khayat (Streamline/Interscope), but this has been removed as this only played on the credits, which features the students' names.

Epidemic

In my first post-Celta job, I was on a 2 week summer course in Cambridge, UK, with teenagers. Here is the first task-based project to get lower level (A2) learners involved in screenwriting, acting, directing and other roles involved in producing a short film, going against advice that it couldn't be done.  We had one afternoon to film it all, so we had to be organised and keep everyone occupied.  I'll never forget the standing ovation at the course show.  The Spanish kids involved loved it so much, we made a sequel during the following fortnight.  Credits have been removed as this includes students' names.

Notice: No copyright infringement intended. At the request of the students the music used in the production is/was taken from Clint Mansell's soundtrack for the film 'Requiem For A Dream', performed with the Kronos Quartet.

Life at The Leys

Here is a video which I initiated but was made by some of my students at the Leys, Cambridge, Summer 2010.  It  ended up being used as a promo by Bell Educational Trust on their BellStudentVideos webpage:

Teaching in South Korea

This is a promo video I made for a recruitment company, Korea Global Connections about teaching in South Korea.  It was completed in March 2008 and is a bit out-of-date now. It's taken 3 years to rack up 30,000 views on You Tube.

Notice: No copyright infringement intended. Audio track featured is '꽃' by 장윤정 (Jang Yun-jeong) and has not been third-party matched on YouTube.

 Reflective Language Teaching

Here is an edit of a video I made having just arrived for my very first paid teaching job, in South Korea.  It includes my first thoughts about arriving at the school and reflecting after the first day.

KSY PYP Induction

Here is a video I made with students in Riyadh.  It was an attempt to make an induction video for new teachers arriving at the university.  Although it is on You Tube it set to 'unlisted' and cannot be searched publicly:

Teacher Phili In Africa

Here is me teaching at an orphange in Mwanza, Tanzania (Nov 2006).  I made a full-length 2 DVD film about my adventure which ran to 3 hours.  I have re-edited this video it from the original footage, especially for this blog:

or try the 'Artistified Version' here.   Below is some more raw footage I recovered the other day. This shows how I got my online moniker, 'Teacher Phili'.  It comes from filming for 'Another Brick In The Wall' video. The finished version follows:

Project X

Here is one part of a full-length film I made with students at CAFA, Beijing, as part of their foundation programme.  All four parts are available by searching the YouTube video link on the Wibiya toolbar at the bottom of the screen.

CAFA Role-Play

This is a slightly edited down role-play from 24 December 2009.  It was an attempt to do something a bit different. Students had to play a character in a public meeting in Shanghai about 'light pollution'.  There was a lot of pre-teaching of vocabulary in the lesson the day before and the students had notes on their characters overnight.  It was only partially successfully, I think, but at least providing a break from the usual reliance on text books.  Part 2 can be found from the YouTube video link below.

Red Nose Day

...and, finally, this is me singing at NILE, Norwich, at the end of my CELTA training, to raise money for Comic Relief (March 2009), embedded as 'public' from my private Facebook account:

'It's not me, It's CELTA'
